Please Don’t Leave Me! Children with Separation Anxiety Disorder

presented by Dana Kennedy, MSW, LICSW

Workshop Description:

Separation anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most prevalent anxiety disorders affecting children six to ten years old. We now know that the popular perception that all children will outgrow being frightened and unable to leave a parent’s side is incorrect. Teenagers, as well, can be immobilized by this disorder. Youth with SAD need therapeutic interventions that are tailored to this phenomenon, their development, and their particular family. Early intervention with this population will help them develop resilience to withstand emotional problems later in life.

This workshop will address developments of the past decade in evidence-based treatment for youth with SAD. Participants will learn the tools to assess this disorder and the interventions clinicians can use. Case illustrations will be part of the presentation. Parents and teachers will also find it of interest to learn how they can best help this population.
