This full day workshop will consist of three individual presentations by Attorney Matthew MacAvoy on legal issues impacting upon the professional responsibilities of school counselors and school administrators. The first presentation will provide an overview of state and federal laws prohibiting discrimination in educational settings including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Title IX, of the Education Amendments of 1972, and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This presentation will provide participants with a working knowledge of these significant anti-discrimination statutes as well as practical advice and recommendations pertaining to the application of  these laws in the school setting. The second d presentation will address issues pertaining to student discipline in public school settings and school district responses to allegations of bullying and harassment. A thorough understanding of school district and staff responsibilities when taking disciplinary action against students and when responding to complaints of bullying or harassment is essential for school counselors and administrators. The third and final presentation will focus on issues pertaining to student privacy and confidentiality in the school setting. Subjects to be addressed include, but are not limited to, the requirements of federal and state statutes and regulations governing the maintenance and disclosure of student education and health records, testimonial privileges, and student communications with school counselors.

A $50 registration fee will be charged for each workshop participant earning PDP’s or CEU’s. (NBCC approved) per workshop. Register and pay for all 5 workshops for $225 (30 CEU’s or PDP’s).

Attendance to all 5 workshops and completion of additional course requirements is mandatory.

  • AC MA/CAGS students may register for 3 credits at the regular tuition rate of $1569 plus $20 registration fee.
  • *Special tuition rate for school counselors/school psychologists is $855 plus $20 registration fee. (*cannot be used towards any degree program at Assumption College).

AC Faculty and Students (non credit)
Assumption College students and faculty may attend any workshop at no charge and must register prior to the workshop.
